Things That Go Bump In the Night in Asheville, North Carolina

This week it is feeling Fallesque.  I can smell it and feel it in the air.  Autumn has always been one of my favorite times of year.  I mean, what’s not to like?  Cooler temperatures, leaves beginning their metamorphosis from beautiful and varied greens to the kalidoscope of colors that Western North Carolina offers up each year as a precious gift to locals and visitors alike.  Favorite, snuggly sweaters get to come out of exile, apples are tasty and plentiful and yes, there’s All Hallows’ Eve; also known as Halloween.
Halloween actually has its origins in the ancient Celtic festival: Samhain.  This was a time dedicated to taking stock of supplies and slaughtering the required amount of animal protein deemed necessary for impending winter.  That’s all fine and good, but let’s talk candy……
Breathes there a child or an adult for that matter that isn’t gobsmacked by the idea that there is going to be free candy? Ok, now let’s be realistic.  Always and everywhere there will be some participators in this fest that will just buy anything to get the job done!  Candy no one really gets thrilled with and wants to give away. These pitiful specimens will be what I have always termed ” loser” candy. However, lurking deep within every Trick or Treaters soul beats the yearning heart of a child (or a desperate adult furtively waiting either in the wings or at home) just lusting for a Hershey Bar, Butterfinger, Baby Ruth or some fun item they had “back in the day” like Dot’s, Bit O’Honey, Chunky or Goobers. Those were the days my friend, we thought they’d never end. Why, you didn’t even have to have them x-rayed.
Gary and I will be on the porch again this Halloween waiting to see all the creativity, innocence, fun and fright this year’s children have in store for us here At Cumberland Falls Bed and Breakfast Inn.  Crack out the sweater and join us.
