Followers of this blog know that Asheville is rich in art and music.  The Appalachian mountains are one of the oldest mountain ranges in the eastern U.S., formed roughly 480 million years ago and the soul of mountain music was born there.
Though commonly known for the established and juried art community flourishing in this area, we enjoy a rich music history as well encompassing nearly every kind of genre.  Western North Carolina is music central and whether standing on the corner listening to a talented busker or occupying a large concert hall, music is our heritage here in the mountains.

This year, 2014, is sponsored by Jacquelyn and Bruce Rogow and opening night is June 21 with the violin genius mastery of Itzhak Perlman.  The program will be varied with audience favorites of the Overture from Romeo and Juliet-Fantasy and the Roumanian Rhapsody Number 1 beginning this special evening.  After a brief intermission this many time Grammy award winner will bring magic to this very special evening with his interpretation of “Remembrance” of Schindler’s List fame, “Cassablanca” stirring up every romantic moment Bogart/Bergman delivered onscreen and “The Tango” all will remember from Scent of A Woman as Al Pacino proved that sight is not a pre-requisite for mesmerizing dance moves.

This is only the beginning performance of the season followed by Ravel and Rachmaninoff on June 22 and Chamber Music at Porter on June 23, 2014. All of us who went through the challenging political turmoil of the late 1960’s and early 1970’s with our country embroiled in Vietnam will well remember , Peter and Noel Paul  of Peter, Paul and Mary fame.  Whether you seek Patriotic music, opera, piano, violin or song used in conjunction with rich story telling, you cannot help but to find just what your inner music child is seeking in this season at Brevard Music Center.
