There are times when you want to “live like a rock star” in celebration of something wonderfully special and dine like a king paying like kind for said services. Then, there are times when you have not chosen to cancel the couples vacation you have been promising yourselves but you are not kidding yourselves about the need to conduct that vacation fully aware of costs…..Asheville Cheaper Eats at your service.
For visitors and locals alike Asheville offers some of the most innovative, awesomely delicious and purely inspired cuisine. Some of it is also a bit pricey. The purpose of this blog is to help those coming to Asheville seeking good but not horribly expensive cuisine. We’ll cover the “living like a rock star” selections in another blog.
Recently, after we’d finished feeding the weekend guests at our Asheville Bed and Breakfast ,we decided to go and find some lunch. Checked out a place called Rasta Pasta. They specialized in homemade pasta. For those of you that are pasta lovers….but are now scratching your head and wondering what the difference is…Go and you’ll know! The sandwiches are fresh, creative and delicious and my Chicken Pesto selection was served on Foccacia bread that was awesome. I am told the pizza rocks as well. 10 mins from our inn.
Could not even touch this topic without calling your attention to Nine Mile, a 3 minute, if you are very slow walk from the inn. Fresh, varied, delicious, more food than you can eat Jamaican Caribbean food. They serve lunch and dinner and it is a glorious adventure.
Doc Chey’s Noodle House: Located downtown Inexpensive, tasty, oriental type fair. Veggies fresh and not overcooked in stir fry served with noodles or rice seasoned divinely. Their slogan is Peace, love and noodles. I can go for that.
Artisan Catering and Deli: My particular favorite is the spinach salad with goat cheese and candied walnuts. The cranberry chicken salad is excellent served on Sunflower wheat bread…..The soups are fresh daily and they are awesome. Nice light in the place and clean. Mauricio and Vinnie will send you away sated and happy.
Boca: Lunch in the sunny courtyard is always a treat. Service attentive and correct. Location splendid and we have had the Reuben and Pambazo with their trad fries….A heavenly experience both in the space and enjoying the food. No loud music, you can hear yourself think and engage in conversation. WHAT A CONCEPT!
Vinnie’s Neighborhood Restaurant: You’ll love it “in the hood.” The garlic knots are designed by angels and delivered to their location on Merrimon Avenue…10 mins from your home away from home and every single thing this place turns out will make your toes curl…From chicken to beef to calamari and shrimp….You’ll be glad you came. No lunch service at this time.
On the run , don’t want to stop to dine in….too much in Asheville to see and do and just need a slice????…..Get thee to Circle in the Square. The pizza is delicious…Sandwiches: Blue Ridge and Philly Cheese with Mushrooms will have you revved up for your Asheville experience in no time at all.
Ok, you passed on lunch… but now…the fantastic, gourmet breakfast served At Cumberland Falls Bed and Breakfast Inn has worn off and you can’t make it another step without something to eat….Now is the time for a cappuccino and some form of chocolate survival food….Go no further than the French Broad Chocolate Lounge. Vast, eclectic and delicious selection of truffles. Sea salt on dark chocolate caramel and Sipping Chocolate with cinnamon and cayenne have both been sampled as well as too numerous to count truffle experiences and suffice to say that you may likely not be served in a hurry….but wow…Who knew a small piece of chocolate and a cup of cap could be so completely satisfying?
Ok, I think I have given you enough fodder from which to make some inexpensive dining decisions. Let me know what you think after you’ve been there too?
