Most of the time when one inhabits one place or another as a place to live, it has much less to do with any particular affinity for this place than it does with job location. We were foot loose and fancy free and could have chosen any place to live but Asheville is one of the most beautiful places in America 2011– Our Asheville Bed and Breakfast agrees.
We were not even surprised that in the contest that GMA ran this year about the top 10 most beautiful places in America that Asheville found itself a “front and center” contender. Asheville is a wonderful blend of urban convenience, arts galore, cuisine extraordinaire; superb and diverse, creative, well educated (University of North Carolina, Warren Wilson, Mars Hill College, Montreat College, Western University and our own A-B Tech all an asset) and unfailingly polite citizenry. Very family and community centric offering a much needed foil to the ego centric community from which I came in which there was not one iota of care given to those less fortunate save to get them on the bus to go back to Homestead Fl. before nightfall.
From the buskers whose magic melodies float on the soft breezes downtown to chess games that go on into the night at Pritchard Park as owners walk their smiling canine friends watching as dusk comes to the mountains…all of it magic.
Pastoral beauty, majestic mountain vistas normally captured only on postcards and the unfamiliar presence of quiet known only in the forest need not be imagined for it is ours. A stream coursing over rocks creating a soft, consoling sound as it makes its way down the valley. Day done, muscles well worked & spent but happy, a renewal and sense of happiness yours for the taking for just the cost of a pair of serviceable shoes. One last look before leaving may find a blazing poppy colored sun amid gossamer clouds of purple and gray bidding you adieu and wishing you well. A day well spent-Priceless!
